Amalgamation Cake

1 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 cups plain flour
1/2 cup raisins, ground
1/2 cup pecans, chopped
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 pint blackberry jam
8 egg whites (yolks go in the frosting)

Cream the butter and sugar. Add the jam, spices, buttermilk and baking soda. Add the flour and mix until blended. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Turn into three 8- or 9-inch can pans that have been greased, lined with wax paper and grease and flour the wax paper. Bake at 350 degrees F for 35-40 minutes.

Frosting
8 egg yolks
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup butter
1 cup pecans, chopped
1 cup coconut
1 cup raisins, ground
1 1/2 tablespoons cream

Mix all ingredients and cook in a double boiler for 15 minutes. Add a little cream to thin if it gets too thick.
