Cherry Surprises

1/3 cup Crisco
1 3/4 cups sifted cake flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
1 jar maraschino cherries, drained

Mix. Pour batter into a 13 x 9-inch pan and bake at 375 degrees F. Cool and cut into squares.
